Forensic Examination of Handwriting is a set of activities aimed to establish the ownership of the manuscript handwriting and signature to a particular person. It is usually used to determine the authenticity of a signature or to identify a document falsification.
Handwriting investigation has its own specific features.So, in carrying it out, the difficulties lie mainly in the fact that no one has a stable writing and motor skills.After all, the handwriting can vary depending on the psycho-emotional state of a person; posture convenience while writing, pen types, and other minor factors that can significantly change a person’s handwriting.
Handwriting expertise is conducted by the expert with knowledge in the field of judicial handwriting.
The main goals of the handwriting analysis are as follows:
Identificationgoalshelp to establish or disprove a specific executor of the manuscript or signature; Diagnostic goals are necessary for establishing maximum information about the author of a text (research of subjective qualities, psychophysiological condition and other information);
3.The goals of situational studies are to determine the objective conditions for writing a manuscript (in which pose the document was signed;if the handwritingwas intentionally distorted etc.).
The main task of handwriting expertise is the identification of the author of a manuscript or a signature.However, in the process of conducting an expert research, it is possible to establish the following:
to determine whether the signature was performed by one or several people; to determine the statute of limitations of the text.
As a rule, handwritten or digital records, scanned/photographed copies of the documents are provided to implement the research.
Handwriting examination usually answers the following questions:
1)Who performed the handwritten note or signature in the document?
2)Is the signaturepersonally made by a particular person, or is itaforged signature?
3)Were there the factors or conditions that prevented the signing/drafting of the document?
4)What is the approximate age of a person whose handwriting is to bestudied?
5)Does the signature of a document correspond to the date when it was signed?
